On Tuesday 1st of December, Professor Heaven Crawley attended the second annual Sanctuary in Parliament event as a key note speaker. The event organised by City of Sanctuary and Sanctuary Alliance brought together nearly 200 refugees, asylum seekers and their supporters. Over 40 MPs joined the event, which was hosted jointly by Thangam Debonnaire MP for Bristol West and Caroline Lucas MP for Brighton, Chair and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees.
The main themes of the event were Destitution, Safe and Legal Routes and Detention. Heaven’s talk focused on the level of migrants and refugees that settle in the UK showing that not everybody has UK as their destination unlike some common beliefs. The safe and legal routes debate also saw speakers sharing their experiences from Athens and Lesbos; as well as from Syria and Calais.
