Understanding refugee and migrant journeys to Europe

Understanding refugee and migrant journeys to Europe

Professor Heaven Crawley joined three other speakers at this event organised by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) on 15th January. The event is chaired by Kate Adie OBE DL, reporter, who also presents for BBC Radio 4.

The expert panel discusses the challenges of traveling to Europe in the hope of more secure futures and the risks of crossing the Mediterranean. The conversation draws on interviews that the panelist have completed with refugees and migrants in the past few years, critiquing the common assumption that ‘everyone wants to come to Europe’. The event focuses on the issues raised in a recent book Unravelling Europe’s ‘migration crisis’: journeys over land and sea.

Other speakers include Dr Joanne Liu, International President, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF); Dr Jessica Hagen-Zanker, Research Fellow Migration, ODI; and Ahmad Al-Rashid, author, Syrian campaigner and Violence, Conflict and Development Postgraduate at SOAS.
